Studies in American poetry with reading, discussion, and analysis of major poets, among them Eliot, Frost, Hughes, Bishop, Ginsberg, as well as a number of contemporary poets, in relation to their social and intellectual milieu and considering the influences of earlier poets such as Whitman and Dickinson. Class hrs. 3. Prerequisites: ENG 101, 102 Composition and Literature I & II. Not offered every semester.

This course explores gender issues in novels, plays, poems, short stories, and essays written by women. Readings are primarily from modern American and British literature, with global literature in translation, along with historical and cultural perspectives. Students read and analyze literary texts, write critical essays, and relate the history and culture of women to the texts. Class hrs. 3. Prerequisites: ENG 101, 102 Composition and Literature I & II.

This course is intended for non-native speakers of English whose English writing proficiency must increase before they are able to take Composition and Literature I and academic subjects that require essay examinations and college-level proficiency in writing. Through practice in sentence structure, and in planning, writing, and revising essays, students improve academic writing proficiency in English. Class hrs. 5. Prerequisite: A score of 5 or 6 on the Placement Essay Exam.

This course is intended for non-native speakers of English whose English writing proficiency must increase before they are able to take Composition and Literature I and academic subjects that require essay examinations and term papers. Through practice in sentence structure and in planning, writing, and revising essays, students continue to improve writing proficiency in English. Class hrs. 3. Two hours per week of tutorial work in the Academic Support Center are required. Prerequisite: A score of 7 on the Placement Essay Exam or passing grade in ESL 004 Intro to Academic Writing I.

The very beginnings of motion pictures up to the 1950's. A few contemporary projects are included to keep students in touch with modern times. Many films are viewed, and attention is given to details of the evolution of film and the people responsible for the development of the motion picture industry. Class hrs. 3. Offered fall semester.

An in-depth exploration of the major works of the world's most esteemed film directors, examining their art in comparison with their contemporaries. In different years, the focus is on such directors as Bergman, Renoir, Hitchcock, Kurosawa, and John Ford. Class hrs. 3. Not offered every semester.

Students approach film as an art form, an industry, and a system of representation and communication. They study the important role of movies in our culture, learning how Hollywood has helped to reflect and shape our national image throughout history. Class hrs. 3. Not offered every semester.

This course introduces students to the aesthetics and discipline of film study. Students are expected to master critical and analytical skills which aid in the analysis of specific films as works of art. Feature films are screened and discussed. Class hrs. 3. Not offered every semester.
