A course designed to help students gain an appreciation for the richness of Arabic and a desire to master the intricacies of the language. Emphasis is placed upon acquisition of a basic facility in the Egyptian-spoken Arabic dialect. Both oral and written exercises form an integral part of the classroom program. This MESP course is only offered through the Middle East Studies Program of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities. Class 4.

The course begins with a brief examination of the ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Hebrew, and Arab cultures, including discussion of how these were affected by the Greek and Roman civilizations. This is followed by an examination of the three monotheistic world religions-- Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. A course designed to introduce students to the challenges and difficulties experienced by Muslims seeking to relate to and participate in the modern world. Questions of Quranic interpretation and contextualization are explored. Receiving special emphasis are the ways in which Muslims in different societies have interacted politically and intellectually with the changes inaugurated by an ascendant West. This MESP course is only offered through the Middle East Studies Program of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities. Class 4.

The purpose of this course is to help students understand the political, economic, and religious transformations that have occurred and are occurring, along with the various social movements these transformations have spawned. Fundamental concepts of mechanics, forces, vectors and resultants, moments and couples, equilibrium, structures and members, friction, centroids and center of gravity and moments of inertia. Class 3. Prerequisite: PHYS 1113. Corequisite: MATH 1603. (Fall)

Kinematics and kinetics of particles and rigid bodies, plane motion, rectilinear motion, angular motion, work, energy and power, and impulse and momentum. Class 3. Prerequisites: METC 2013 and MATH 1603. (Spring)

Stress and strain, shear and moment diagrams, stresses and deformations of beams, torsion, combined loading and principal stresses, elastic curves, superposition, and design of beams and columns. Class 3. Prerequisites: MATH 1603 and METC 2013. (Fall)
