The course presents the structure, expression, replication, and recombination of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). The interaction of proteins with DNA will be presented. The organization of genes in the genomes of viruses, bactgeria, yeast, and animals will be discussed. Current methods of recombinant DNA technology will be presented. Applicatiions of technologies of molecular biology will be discussed.

Laboratory or field-based research, under the direction of a graduate faculty member, leading to completion of a Master's Thesis. The research is based upon a Thesis Proposal, which should be completed by the time admission to candidacy is filed, i.e., before the student registers for the last 18 hours of graduate study. M.S. candidates are required to enrollfor two seperate semesters in BIOL 6396 for a total of six credit hours. Ifall requiremeents for the thesis have not been completed in two semesters, then continuous enrollment in BIOL 6097, Thesis Continuation, is required. A single grade is assigned for Thesis.
