Part of the Rhetorical Studies track of the UIW English Program, this course engages students in the exploration of contemporary rhetorical theory as a way to examine the social, political, and cultural contexts and effects of discourse and actions.

Part of the Language Arts and Linguistics branch of the UIW English Program, this course is a close and complex examination of the structures and systems of languages-- words, sounds, and complete sentences--and their application to language developement, diversity, acquisition, and teaching. Prerequisites: ENGL 1311, 1312, 2310 and 2383. (Spring, alternate years)

How does gender affect the writing and reading of texts? Is there a characteristically female voice' in writing? These and other questions will be explored in the light of literary texts and theories. Senior level required.

This course will explore Chaucer as a literary artist, focusing on The Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Crieyde but also exlporing the Middle English language, contemporary verse forms, and the medieval context. Senior level required.

A study of representative plays from all forms - histories, tragedies, comedies, romances - and the sonnets. Senior level required.

A study of the major writers of the Southwestern United States, including figures such as Rudolfo Anaya, Jimmy Baca, Sandra Cisneros, Cormac McCarthy, N. Scott Momaday, Leslie Silko, Frank Waters and Terry Tempest Williams. Senior level required.

A study of representative examples of Mexican American prose fiction from an historical perspective. The literary, social and political contexts of writings will be considered in the early twentieth century, the Chicano movement of the late 60s and early 70s, and the contemporary Post-Chicano Movement. Part of the Language Arts and Linguistics branch of the UIW English Program, this course is an exploration of literature written for younger readers, including research in the development of reading interest and the study of selected books, films, and computer software reflecting both the language and culture. Prerequisites: ENGL 1311, 1312, and 2310. (Spring, Summer)
