Study of theories and practices of traditional and modern dramatic forms and conceptions of theatre. Junior level required.

Part of the Literary Studies and Criticism branch of UIW English Program, this course is a study of critical theory and practice of representative examples from the major literary genres, with an emphasis on one of them (e.g. the novel, drama, short fiction, the epic, etc.) This course may be repeated for credit when the topic varies. Prerequisite: ENGL 1311, 1312, and 2310. May be taken as a Cultural Studies elective. (Spring, Summer alternate years)

Part of the Literary Studiesd and criticism branch of the UIW English program this course is an introduction and examination of the Ancient Greek and Roman Classical Periods of Literature. This course situates the study of literary production within the Ancient Greek and Roman cultural and historical contexts by examining the genres of epic, drama, poetry, and relevant philosophical tracts.

A course exploring the main forms of medieval literature, looking at the work of Chaucer, Gower and the Gawain poet, as well as representative works of drama. Junior level required.

The main focus will be on poetry, drama and prose writing of the sixteenth and early seventeenth century, including figures such as Sidney, Lanyer, Spenser, Donne and some Renaissance dramatists. Junior level required.

Beginning with the writing of Milton, this course will move onward through Aphra Behn, Pope, Dryden, Jefferson, Franklin and other key figures of the eighteenth century in both Britain and America. Junior level required.
