This course provides guidance in applying theory and methodology as well as observation in order to gain insights to the needs of second language learners and to develop strategies to facilitate their learning. This will be accomplished through fieldwork, regular, class meetings, and journals. Prerequisites: ENGL 2383 and 4360. (As needed)

EDUC 4601: Pedagogy in the Elem Schools

University of the Incarnate Word
A professional preparation course for prospective teachers that encompasses various categories of knowledge related to professional skills, values, and decision making. Supervised and directed observations in elementary settings will be a major component. The following units of instruction will be included: orientation to the elementary school; developmentally appropriate practice and characteristics of the elementary learner, planning, choosing, and implementing for instruction and assessment using effective strategies and resources; designing integrated/thematic curriculum; classroom climate and behavior management in a culturally diverse environment; teaching and learning with technology. Will be taught on UIW campus and on Professional Development School campuses. Requires 2 3-hour blocks of teaching time per week at the elementary sites and students must complete a practicum consisting of 6-8 hours on a PDS site every Friday. This is an ON SITE course and will be offered at least once every year during normal school day hours (8:00 AM - 3:30 PM). (Spring) Senior level required.

Supervised and directed participation in secondary settings will be a major component. The following units of instruction will be included: adolescent development - physical, emotional, and social - and appropriate behavior management; classroom climate, curriculum content and structure of middle and secondary schools; effective instructional strategies using technology, teaming, and innovative techniques for middle and secondary students; administrative responsibilities of the teacher in a culturally diverse community. Will be taught on UIW and Professional Development School campuses. Requires 2 3-hour blocks of teaching time per week at the specified locations and students must complete a practicum consisiting of 6 8-hours on a PDS campus every Friday. This is an ON SITE course and will be offered at least once every year during the normal school day hours (8:00 AM to 3:30 PM). (Spring) Senior level required.

This course is the last course in the professional development sequence required for Texas teacher certification. It requires a full time commitment by the prospective teacher during the normal school day (7:30 AM- 4:00 PM) and takes place ON SITE in a school assigned by the Field Placement Coordinator and the Director of Teacher Education. Because of the scheduling differences between Texas school calendars and the UIW calendar, students will be required to begin/end this course at times not coinciding with the UIW schedule. Students must attend teacher in-service meetings, faculty meetings, and one school district board meeting during the semester, as well as all other required meetings and/or extracurricular events required by the mentor teacher or the school administration. (Fall, Spring)
