The earth and its inhabitants as revealed in rocks. An introduction to the vast time element in the formation of planet earth. Brief survey of the plant and animal kingdoms, elementary principles of stratigraphy, and a systematic study of the development of the earth from its origin as a planet to the present. The study of the Earth as a habitat and the interrelationships between humans and the environment. Topics include geologic factors in urban and regional land use planning, how geologic processes impact human life and development, the human impact on our environment, as well as the use of mineral and fuel resources, pollution and waste management and their environmental impact. Concurrent enrollment in GEOL 1105 mandatory. (R)

Includes consideration of the Constitution of the United States and the constitutions of the states, with special emphasis on that of Texas. Prerequisite: By permission only. Enrollment limited to students who have already completed a minimum of 6 credit hours of government courses but have not satisfied the statutory requirement for study of the federal and state constitutions. Ensures compliance with TEC §51.301.

Terrorism and political violence. This elective academic co-op course introduces students to terrorism and the war against terrorism. Particular emphasis is placed on the citizen's response to emerging public policy at the local, state, and national levels. Students will apply concepts learned in class to specific scenarios applicable to the public sector in order to address the urgent safety and security concerns facing society. Open to all students. Principles of electricity as required by HVAC technicians including proper use of test equipment, A/C and D/C circuits, and component theory and operation. Advanced electrical instruction and skill building in installation and servicing of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment including detailed instruction in motors and power distribution, motors, motor controls and application of solid state devices. The student will exhibit knowledge of basic principles of electricity, electrical current, circuitry, and A/C devices; apply Ohm's law to electrical calculations; perform electrical continuity, voltage and current tests with appropriate meters and demonstrate electrical safety. Prerequisite: None.

An introduction to the refrigeration cycle, basic thermodynamics, heat transfer, temperature/pressure relationship, safety, refrigeration containment, and refrigeration components. The student will identify the components and explain the application and operation of the basic refrigeration cycle; explain theories of thermodynamics and heat transfer; demonstrate proper application and use of tools, test equipment, and safety procedures; and demonstrate accepted refrigeration applications. Prerequisite: None.
