One of four Level III courses. Principles and concepts of mental health, psychopathology and treatment modalities related to the nursing care of clients and their families. Offers the opportunity for students to study the intrapersonal and interpersonal needs of individuals and their families who are experiencing stress, conflict and anxiety. Methods of encouraging the individual to assess his or her own behavior, identify unfulfilling behaviors and undertake behavioral changes within the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship. Among the therapeutic tools employed by the student within the framework of the nursing process are the therapeutic use of self and the concept of self-awareness. Participation as members of the mental health team, while making assessments and plans with their patients/clients. Must be repeated if clinical RNSG 2160 is not successful. Prerequisites: RNSG 1161, 1441, BIOL 2420, PSYC 2314. Concurrent: RNSG 2160, ENGL 1301, PHIL 2306. Assessment Levels: R3, E3, M3.

Application of advanced concepts and skills for the development of the associate degree nurse's roles in complex nursing situations with adult clients/families in structured settings. Emphasis is given to judgment and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This Level IVcourse emphasizes establishing priorities while using clinical decision making in caring for multiple patients/clients with complex medical-surgical health problems in intermediate and critical care settings. Communication skills practiced in small group simulated situations, patient interviewing, patient teaching and professional leadership role with peer group. Pharmacology with math computation, nutrition, lifestyle and accountability are integrated as the student plans and implements nursing care for patients with rehabilitative chronic or life-threatening conditions. Must be repeated if clinical RNSG 2161 is not successful. Assessment Levels: R3, E3, M3.
