Applied jazz keyboard course designed to develop the skills for the use of the keyboard as a practical tool for ear training, understanding theoretical concepts, improvising, arranging, and composing. Material covered includes advanced scales, chords and keyboard voicings, applied chord substitution, harmonic sequences and symmetrical progressions, keyboard harmonization from lead sheets, and applied reharmonization. Required as a second instrument for students not majoring in jazz piano. Prerequisites: Grade of C or above in MUJ 231. 1 credit (Spring)

Audition and permission of instructor required. 1 credit (Fall, Spring) Languages High school language courses may be used as follows: 1. The first two years of high school level language count as the equivalent of the first semester of a college level course. Students with less than three years of high school level language may complete the first semester college course for graduation credit. 2. The first three years of high school level language count as the equivalent of the first two college semesters. Students with fewer than four years of high school level language may complete the second semester college course for graduation credit. Students who completed three years of foreign language in high school will not receive credit for the first semester college course unless at least five years separate the last high school course and the first college course. 3. Four years of high school level language count as the equivalent of three college semesters. 4. Students may participate in College challenge procedures to confirm knowledge and skills related to foreign language courses.
