The major genres, including slave narratives, autobiography, and poetry, among others, are examined. Major historical movements including the Harlem Renaissance and Black Arts Movement are explored. The literature is analyzed in historical context allowing examination of how the literature was influenced by and responded to conditions of African-American life at different moments in American history.
