4.00 Credits
Fourhours credit. An experience external to the college for an advanced student in a specialized field involving a written agreement between the college and a business or industry. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college and that are directly related to specific occupational outcomes. This may be a paid or non-paid experience. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. As outlined in the learning plan, the student will master the theory, concepts, and skills involving the tools, materials, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental and legal systems associated with the particular occupation and the business/industry; demonstrate ethical behaviors, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, communicating in the applicable language of the occupation and the business or industry. Prerequisite: sophomore standing and a 3.0 or better G.P.A. One hour lecture and sixteen hours each week at the workplace.

2.00 Credits
Two hours credit. An introduction to the profession of sonography and the role of the sonographer. Emphasis on medical terminology, ethical/legal aspects, written and verbal communication, and professional issues relating to registry, accreditation, professional organizations and history of the profession. Thirty-two classroom hours. Co-requisites: DMSO 1302.

Three hours credit. Basic acoustical physics and acoustical waves in human tissue. Emphasis on ultrasound transmission in soft tissues, attenuation of sound energy, parameters affecting sound transmission, and resolution of sound beams. Forty-eight classroom hours. Co-requisite: DMSO 1210. Lab fee.

Three hours credit. Continuation of the study of basic ultrasound physics. Includes interaction of ultrasound with tissues, the mechanics of ultrasound production and display, various transducer designs and construction, quality assurance, bioeffects, and image artifacts. May introduce methods of Doppler flow analysis. Forty-eight classroom hours. Prerequisites: DMSO 1210, and 1302. Co-requisites: DMSO 1360, 1351, and 1405. Program acceptance required.

Three hours credit. Sectional anatomy of the male and female body. Includes anatomical relationships of organs, vascular structures, and body planes and quadrants. Forty-eight classroom hours. Prerequisites: DMSO 1210 and 1302. Co-requisite: DMSO 1360, 1342, and 1351. Program acceptance required.

Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. One hundred ninety-two clinical hours. Prerequisites: DMSO 1361, DMSO 2353, and DMSO 2405.

Four hours credit. Normal and pathological abdominal and pelvic structures as related to scanning techniques, patient history and laboratory data, transducer selection, and scanning protocols. Forty-eight classroom hours and thirty-two lab hours. Prerequisites: DMSO 1210 and 1302. Co-requisites: DMSO 1360, 1342, and 1351. Lab fee. Program acceptance required.
