A study of social, sexual, and racial inequalities and their causes and consequences. Topics include class and ethnic ranking, discrimination, power, status, and social mobility in American society. Prerequisite: admission to upper level.

Emphasis is placed on such topics as distribution of disease in society, the organization of the health professions, social change and health care, death and dying, stress and disease, and social factors affecting health services and their utilization. Introduction to the generalist perspective of social work practice and the profession of Social Work. This course will help students develop a more authentic understanding and appreciation of the profession. Students will be exposed to what social workers do and the importance of considering the environmental context that surrounds all decisions.
