0 Credits Undeclared division Non Credit Courses Although you will be making a nightshirt in this class, it is not project oriented. Emphasis is on building basic garment sewing skills that can be applied to any project, from pattern and fabric selection and preparation to basic fit and the importance of grain in layout and cutting. Common beginner sewing frustrations are discussed and exercises to help you learn to recognize and solve them. Professional tips and techniques are taught throughout class encouraging the production of "custom made" rather than "home made" garments. Special techniques include pinning for accuracy, staggered grading and clipping, and understitching. You will receive a folder containing all the information taught in class. General knowledge of machine sewing required. NOTE: Please bring your own sewing machine to class. Materials list will be provided.

This course's emphasis is placed on using industry techniques to achieve professional-looking results. Take your garments from "home made" to "custom made." Bring your sewing questions, frustrations and current project to the last class. You will learn not only by getting help with your own project, but via the other students' problems and solutions. Create an authentic heirloom quality baby bonnet using French, Swiss, and English cotton laces, fine batiste, and silk ribbon. Although heirloom garments look extremely intricate, they are actually quite easy to do with a simple zigzag sewing machine. You will learn to make tiny pintucks, join and insert the most delicate laces, and use entredeux and lace beading. This is suitable for the advanced beginner sewer. REQUIRED MATERIALS: Bring a zigzag-capable sewing machine on which you are comfortable making the most basic garments.
