CFK 830: The Marching Percussion Camp

0 Credits Undeclared division College for Kids Would you like to play drums, read music or bring your playing ability up to another level? This camp will introduce you to the marching percussion style and proper playing technique associated with a drum line and percussion ensemble. The drum line is made up of a snare drum line, a multi tom line, a bass drum line and a cymbal line. The percussion ensemble is made up of xylophone, marimba, bells timpani, and auxiliary percussion. These are the rhythm or percussion section of a marching band or drum and bugle corps. The technique will be enforced by drum exercises that will enhance your playing ability and prepare you for a concert to be performed on Friday. You do not need to know how to play drums orpercussion instruments but it would help if you want to play a particular instrument. If you own an instrument you may bring it to camp. It is necessary to know how to read basic music. This camp is co-ed for ages 11-17. MATERIALS FEE: $10 payable to instructor on the first day of camp. LUNCH: Please bring a lunch that requires no refrigeration and plenty of beverages including water.

Make plaster casts of animal tracks, tie-dye t-shirts with vegetable dyes, build a bird feeder and mix your own seed blend to attract specific bird species. Make recycled paper and test for acid rain, construct a bug house for observing insects, study the feeding habits of owls and dissect the remains of their lunch, and learn about geology by growing your own crystal garden and breaking open your own geode. You will step into the shoes of a detective and uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. Using powers of observations and the Inspectikit, you will have all you need to get started on your detective adventure. You will use the Case Stamper to probe the science of tracking by stamping out a scenario on a case card according to a pre-determined story. Build Spynoculars so you can observe clues from afar and to take turns on short surveillance shifts to test your observation abilities. Build your own Secret Safe and challenging others to crack the code! Connect the dots using the Scene Solver to reconstruct the scene of a crime. Using your Whodunit Kit, you can practice the skills of recall and observation. From decoding messages to metal detectors and night vision, you will have the opportunity to check out spy equipment and even create your own edible message! You will use the Secret Code Breaker to communicate stealthily. With the Undercover Observer the viewer allows you to observe visually, while the spy ear enhances your hearing. Each day is devoted to different aspects of the garden, allowing you to progressively enrich your understanding of how living things grow and how they interact with the environment around them. You will perform hands-on experiments, play themed games, and enjoy a snack and story related to the day?s themes. A mural will grow through the course of the camp as you illustrate your discoveries at the close of each day. The first day, you will learn where things grow, the different characteristics of seeds, and explore what seeds become. You will make your own seed badges to take home! On the second day, you will discover what types of weather are vital for a healthy garden. You will make your very own sun visors to wear when you work in a garden! On the third day, you will explore the different parts of plants and leaves. You will make your very own Budding Bean necklace to take home! Day four, you will investigate what plants produce. You examine the different parts of flowers, fruits, and vegetables using your microscopes. On the last day, you will examine the other inhabitants of the garden, including butterflies, ladybugs, and bees, and learn how these creatures help a garden grow. It quickly and automatically reverses and turns to embark on a new course. You control its movement and adjust its sensitivity to sound. You will get to design, build and program other robots that can do some interesting tricks as you learn to use a hand-held microcomputer. There are beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The vehicle travels the rough terrain overcoming objects in its path on a course for you to conquer. Sand stones, twigs and balls will be all part of the challenge for your tracked vehicle. Look out for those surprise obstacles. Watch your tracker and see how long it takes you to go the length of the course in a timed race. Do not miss out on learning new ideas on building your own obstacle course. You will also learn about gears as you build your vehicle.
