Course Goals 1. Demonstrate understanding of how teachers can anticipate and avoid student behavioral and instructional problems. 2. Identify and explain the components of effective classroom and instructional management. 3. Identify and explain the components of the educator's role in classroom management. 4. Identify, describe, explain, and compare models for managing the classroom environment and student behavior with and without consequences. 5. Explain and compare strategies for resolving behavior problems. 6. Demonstrate knowledge of the possible basis for behavioral problems and how to deal with them. 7. Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between teacher and student behaviors. 8. Demonstrate understanding of motivation and motivational strategies 9. Demonstrate ability to systematically examine problem behaviors and determine solutions.

Description: This course provides a critical study of the history, issues, trends, and supporting research in special education. This course will enable the student to identify psychological, physical, educational, medical, behavioral and learning characteristics and needs of individuals with various disabilities, as well as students from diverse cultural, social, ethnic and racial backgrounds. Inclusion of students with disabilities and techniques to adopt instruction to fit individual needs will be emphasized. An understanding of legislation, regulations, and litigation related to serving individuals with disabilities will enable the student to correlate individualized educational programs with the principles of normalization and least restrictive environment.
