Students will examine the work of prominent authors of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, with attention to their influences, defining characteristics, and mutual concerns. 3 credits.

Students will give concentrated attention to the work of significant literary figures from different eras, considered either individually or in small groups. Course content will vary by instructor, but may include, for example, Chaucer, Milton, Pope and Swift, Dickens, or Jane Austen. 3 credits.

This seminar will focus on Shakespeare's major plays. The course is limited to students who have demonstrated superior academic success in previous study of Shakespeare. Major research paper will be required. Prerequisites: ENG325 and permission of the instructor. 3 credits.

This course will address issues in writing and editing documents for the World Wide Web, CDROM, and other new media. Topics will include creating documents that are easy to navigate, using hyperlinks to enrich content, structuring journalistic articles for online publication and multimedia presentation, and creating user-friendly Web sites. Though students will learn to create Web pages, the emphasis in this course is on writing, editing, and communications theory rather than graphics and design. This is a writing intensive course. Prerequisites: ENG371, ordinarily taken in senior year. 3 credits.

An intensive preparation for research-based and in-depth writing projects, this course provides students with opportunities to improve their skills in research methods and to refine their writing style. Foundation course required of all English majors. Prerequisite: Senior English major. 3 credits.

Each student will select a topic or a writer for study and research under the tutelage of a member of the department. The seminar sessions will meet regularly for the presentation and critique of students' progress. Each student is expected to produce a significant research paper and make an oral presentation and defense. Foundation course required of all English majors. Prerequisite: ENG489. 3 credits.

Students in Communication Studies are encouraged to pursue internships in properly supervised and professionally rewarding settings such as on the staff of television and radio stations, local and area newspapers, public relations firms, advertising agencies, and house publications for businesses and government agencies. Regular class meetings and papers are required. 3 credits.

Core Complement Course in Foreign Languages This course provides reinforcement of the four basic language skills. It includes graduated audio-lingual training and linguistic analysis of spoken American English, while developing reading and writing skills. It is intended for those who have the equivalent of one to three years of previous English study. Designed for students with a TOEFL score below 500; 173 on the computerized TOEFL exam. 3 credits each.

Core Complement Course in Foreign Languages This course offers an intensive audio-lingual practice, an integrated review of structure, advanced linguistic analysis, college-level reading, and advanced composition. It is designed particularly for individuals who have been residing in the United States and plan to continue their studies at an American college or university. Prerequisite: TOEFL score between 500 and 557; 173-220 on the computerized TOEFL exam. 3 credits each.
