This course integrates content, methods, and materials for instruction in elementary school literacy. Topics include: creating a community of learners in a literacy-rich environment, delivery of a balanced literacy program with a focus on teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension utilizing the reading/writing workshop model, role of assessment for planning instruction, evaluation and reporting of literacy progress. The design and implementation of the workshop model is examined from teaching beginning reading through the upper elementary grades.
