Attend this workshop led by Dr. Elaine Tagliareni to examine these questions and consider creative answers. In this participative workshop, faculty from associate degree and diploma nursing schools in our region will examine underlying assumptions and mental models of nursing education, community nursing, and curriculum paradigms and brainstorm ways to restructure faculty roles, curricula and teaching learning strategies. There will be a particular focus on the role of faculty and students in new care settings. Ideas and innovative strategies will be generated as we lay the foundation for rethinking and reshaping basic nursing curricula. Guided by Dr. Tagliareni's expertise and enthusiasm, participants will leave with a sense of excitement for the future of nursing education in upstate New York and beyond. During the workshop participants will: " Examine underlying assumptions and mental models of basic nursing education. " Discuss ways to restructure faculty roles, curricula and teaching-learning strategies for a collaborative, community-based system of health care. " Identify settings in the local community for future practice for associate degree nurse graduates. " Explore ways to effectively institute curriculum change.

CEMI 200: Advance Directive Seminar
3.00 Credits
Tompkins Cortland Community College
This seminar with ethical, medical, and legal panelists will address the current landscape of advance directives, new legislation, and how to discuss end of life issues with clients, patients, and others. The video "Fidelity, Wisdom, and Love" is a moving conversation between a husband and wife regarding future health care planning and end of life treatment decisions. It features Kathleen Chalfant, who starred in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play WIT, and her husband, Henry. They talk about what they would want from each other should either of them have to serve as the other's proxy. Their discussion is based on extensive research and case studies conducted by the Division of Medical Ethics and Depts. of Public Health and Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. An expert on medicine and the law will present an overview on legal and ethical issues in health care today as they relate to end of life issues. He will be followed by a practicing attorney, specializing in estate planning law, who will discuss the advanced planning initiative and give specific and practical guidance on talking with clients about advance directives. He will also review current law and the New York State approved advance directives forms. An active physician with a specialty in geriatrics and a hospital social worker will discuss how they converse with patients about advance directives; noting difference between private practice, nursing home, and hospital. The panel will open the floor to questions, providing additional guidance about management of principal ethical and legal problems that arise in when working with clients/patients: informed consent, confidentiality, decisions regarding life-support, advance directives and surrogate decision-makers, duty to care for indigent and risky patients.
