Literature for Children presents a study of the poetry and prose available for children from preschool through junior high school. Students will study the characteristics of children's books including picture, folk, fantasy, biography, historical fiction, information books, contemporary realistic fiction, and poetry. Topics will include evaluation of children's books, principles of book selection, illustrations in books, cultural diversity in children's literature, and motivating children's responses to books. Prerequisite: ENGL 102. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Fall and spring semesters.

Students use the creative writing journal as a tool for exploring and developing creative expression. Students develop a reading list in an area of interest. The instructor serves as the student's writing mentor throughout the certificate program and meets with the students for conferences at regular intervals to discuss the journal and portfolio development. This course helps students focus on the meaning of literature and how to communicate this meaning to others through oral reading. This survey film course provides an analytical overview of the development of the cinema as an art form. The focus is on American works, although some international contributions may be studied. This honors seminar is an investigation of leadership, as it has been perceived over several millenniums. Class discussions focus on imaginative literature, non-fiction prose, and contemporary media that present the leader in action and the challenges, methods, and essential elements of leadership. Significant outside reading is required. Prerequisites: B or better grade in ENGL 101, and 3.5 GPA or membership in the Honors program. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Fall semester.

This course introduces students to current theory and practice with an emphasis on the development of writing competencies in the major journalistic modes. Objectivity, fairness, balance, ethics, and publication law are discussed. Writing assignments include news, sports, profiles, features, and editorials. Prerequisite: ENGL 101. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Fall semester.
