This course introduces students to the fundamentals for developing and writing screenplays for both film and television. Story analysis, concept development, the writing process, and script format are emphasized. Other topics include networking, marketing, and screenwriting resources. ENGL 200 fulfills the SUNY General Education requirement in the Arts. Prerequisite: Prior completion or concurrent enrollment in ENGL 100. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Fall and spring semesters.

Fundamentals of Speech is designed to aid in developing effective oral communication techniques. The course consists of the study of the principles and the methods of public address, the preparation and delivery of speeches, and the analysis of student and outside speakers. Extemporaneous speaking and the development of organization in speech composition are stressed. Prerequisite: ENGL 101. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Fall and spring semesters.

A study of listening as one of the four communication arts. Students learn the definition of listening, its place in the communication process, its importance in our academic, vocational and social pursuits, and the various techniques useful in improving listening effectiveness. Application of these techniques to discriminative listening, comprehensive listening, therapeutic listening, critical listening, and appreciative listening are examined. In addition, the course touches upon physiological, psychological, and social factors that affect the listening process. Prerequisite: ENGL 101. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Spring semester.

This course is an introduction to the basic principles of interpersonal communication. Theoretical perspectives are presented and integrated with practical applications. The focus is on developing skills which contribute to effective interpersonal communication. Topic areas include relational development, self-awareness, interpersonal perception, language, listening, assertiveness, social roles, and conflict management. This course will examine the foundation and development of the literature of the United States from the Colonial period through Transcendentalism. Students will develop their abilities to analyze, interpret, and use effective research and writing processes to produce papers that examine the major themes, historical perspective, significant form, style and or artistic convention of literary works from this period. Prerequisite: ENGL 102. 3 cr. (3 Lec.) Fall and spring semesters.

This course traces the traditions and innovations in American literature from the time of Mark Twain to the present day. Class sessions are divided into three modules that reflect the three genres of literature covered: the novel, poetry, and drama. Prerequisite: ENGL 102. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Spring semester.

Exposes students to the body of English-language literature arising from the native cultures indigenous to the contiguous United States. Works studied range in time from before the Revolutionary War to the present; range in origin from the Iroquois/Creek confederacies of the East to the Athabascan cultures of the West; range in genre from oral literature to the novel; and range in form from text to film. Prerequisite: ENGL 102. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Spring semester.

This course provides an overview of the study of communication and culture. It focuses on factors that promote awareness and understanding of the role of culture in human communication. It is designed to develop the student's understanding of intercultural communication across a variety of contexts (social, cultural, historical). The course attempts to balance theory with practical experiences and exercises designed to increase intercultural sensitivity. Emphasis is placed on class participation. This course focuses on a critical discussion of short stories, covering a broad range of forms and techniques. American, British, and Continental authors of short fiction are studied in this course. This course explores the use of traditional three-act narrative structure and alternative narrative structures in the feature-length screenplay through close analysis of appropriate texts and films. The course emphasizes creative problem solving, organizational strategies, and story development. In addition, students examine screenplay format, treatments, query letters, pitching, and resources. For the major course project, students write a feature-length screenplay. Prerequisite: ENGL 200. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Spring semester.
