This course helps students develop essential writing skills. Work with paragraph development, grammatical correctness, and the essentials of punctuation forms the core of the course. Introductory activity on the development of a five-paragraph essay is included. Students must receive at least a "C" grade to pass and to take additional English courses. This course is not intended for non-native speakers of English who have yet to complete ESOL classes. This is a noncredit course that may not be applied toward any degree or certificate program, but it may be counted toward a full-time load for financial aid purposes. Context for the writing assignments, which may be centered on a theme, is provided by readings drawn from a variety of academic disciplines. Students learn how to summarize, paraphrase, quote, and synthesize sources. Students are introduced to the research process, information literacy, and documentation styles. Prerequisite: C or better grade in ENGL 099 or appropriate assessment test score. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Fall and spring semesters.

They develop the critical thinking skills necessary to research topics and write and revise academic papers. Context for the assignments, which may be centered on a theme, is provided by scholarly readings drawn from a variety of disciplines. Students develop information literacy skills as they engage in the research process. Student writing will be properly documented. ENGL 101 fulfills the SUNY General Education Basic Communication requirement. An honors section is offered. Prerequisite: C or better grade in ENGL 100 or appropriate assessment. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Extensive writing, using various rhetorical modes, will help students develop an appreciation and an understanding of fiction, drama, and poetry as forms of literary expression. Report Writing incorporates discussion, analysis and design of the principal types of formal and informal reports including incident, field trip, investigation, evaluation, feasibility, instructions, and description. Students are introduced to the basics of report writing style. A review of fundamentals of grammar and usage needed for clear, concise reports, as well as the mechanics of writing are included. ENGL 103 fulfills the SUNY General Education requirement in Basic Communication. Prerequisite: ENGL 101. 3 Cr. (3 Lec.) Fall and spring semesters.

Provides students with the opportunity to experience the various techniques involved in acting, such as use of body, voice, movement, and character development. Application and use of make-up are discussed and included in acting assignments. Activities include improvisation, scenarios, and workshops. Emphasis is on participation and in-class exercises. Substantial outside preparation in the form of extra rehearsal hours is required. ENGL 105 fulfills the SUNY General Education requirement in the Arts. Corequisite: ENGL 100. 3 Cr. (2 Lec., 2 Lab.) Students use the creative writing journal as a tool for exploring and developing creative expression. Students develop a reading list in an area of interest. The instructor serves as the student's writing mentor throughout the certificate program, and meets with the students for conferences at regular intervals to discuss the journal and portfolio development.
