EMT 220: Basic Emergency Medical Technician D

This course is designed to prepare students for New York State certification. Students successfully completing this course are able to take the New York State basic EMT practical skills exam. Passing the skills exam makes the student eligible to take the New York State written certification examination. Upon completion, students will be skilled in basic life support, assessment and management of trauma, as well as medical, environmental, and obstetrical emergencies. 10 Cr. (9 Lec., 2 Lab.) Fall semester through March of the following spring semester.

Designed to prepare the student in emergency care at the intermediate level for New York State Emergency Medical Technician exam. This course is for professional rescuers. There is a heavy focus on competency in trauma evaluation, rapid field assessment, and intervention. Competency based skills in this course concentrate on advanced airway management, intravenous infusions, and the use of the defibrillator. The intermediate emergency medical technician will be able to provide pre-hospital care to the acutely ill or injured. Prerequisite: Basic EMT-D NYS certification. 8 Cr. (2 Lec., 10 Lab.) Fall semester.

This course uses instructional scenarios in skill labs throughout the course to integrate didactic learning and psychomotor skills development in emergency patient management. In addition, 300-plus hours of supervised hospital and field (ambulance) clinical are required for competency in managing patient care situations. Upon passing this course, the student will be eligible to take the NYS skill and written exam at the EMT critical care level. Prerequisite: Current EMT intermediate status. 8 Cr. (2 Lec., 10 Lab.) Spring semesters.
