Topics will include exploration of the world of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, preservation and safety, the role of microbes in biotechnology, industry, and agriculture, antibiotic resistance, viral and bacterial diseases of humans, and the use of microbes or microbial products in bioterrorism. Students examine theories of inequality, deviance, and health and, when possible, explore their utility via service learning. Service learning takes the student into the community where he or she not only learns sociology by way of real world experiences but also assists a community organization in realizing its goals. Community partners include schools, nursing homes, hospitals, and many other nonprofit agencies.     Session Cycle: Varies Yearly Cycle: Every Third This course treats the issues of gender and health from a sociological perspective. Focusing on the role that gender plays in the opportunity for health and the likelihood of illness, this course explores the causes and consequences of different health outcomes for women and men and the myths and stereotypes about each group. For example, many believe that women have higher rates of mental illness than men but what, if any, is the evidence for this view? This course will also explore the gender stratification that exists within the health care industry. The course is U.S. based but it will cover some cross-cultural comparisons of gender, health and illness.
