    Student teachers do a 10-week practica at either an Early Childhood or Elementary setting under the supervision of a licensed cooperating teacher in an approved setting under the guidance of a college instructor. During this placement, one of the two required Work Samples will be completed. Prerequisite: All professional education courses satisfactorily completed; Student Teaching Application submitted and approved.

    Seminar provides students opportunities to discuss student teaching experiences, work on their Work Samples, complete their Portfolios, undergo mock interviews, and prepare to enter the work force as licensed educators. Prerequisite: Admission to Education Program.

    Designed to introduce prospective teachers to the world of education by overviewing topics such as: what it means to be a teacher; the historical and philosophical roots of teaching; leaders influential in education; the development of American education; and the political, economic, social, and legal foundations of education; curriculum and instruction; international trends in education; and school reform. Emphasis will be given to the current issues challenging educational structures, including finances, standards, inclusion, literacy, ELL learners, the digital divide, special needs students, and cultural competency.

    Introduces graduate students to action research principles and practices; explores implications of research findings; takes students through introductory lessons in formulating research projects; examines current research principles and practices. Students will review, analyze and critique several action research articles and begin to develop their own action research projects.

    This course is designed to prepare future educators to be effective, culturally conscious instructors in multi-cultural classrooms. Such topics will be covered as the meaning of culture, prejudice, racism, ethnicity, pluralism, and assimilation, as well as exploring the general history of multi-culturalism in the United States. Specific minorities such as African-Americans, Latinos, Asians, Native Americans and Arab Americans will also be examined, as well as looking at gender and socio-economics as factors influencing the classroom. We will look at the relationship between culture and education, and learn how to design curriculum that is culturally sensitive and inclusive.

    Good classroom management can make or break the effectiveness of a teacher, at any grade level, of any subject. To be an effective, successful teacher requires an ability to create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. This course will outline the basics of classroom management at both early childhood and elementary levels, discuss common problem behaviors, the roots of those behaviors, and strategies for dealing with those behaviors.

    This course will cover the essentials in developing a Biblical worldview with regard to education. It will explore the history of Christian schools, and Biblical and philosophical perspectives relative to the field of education. Students will examine teaching opportunities in Christian schools at home and abroad. This is designed to help students achieve their ACSI Teacher Certification upon completion of the MAT program and 6 semester credits of Bible.

    This course will focus on equipping future teachers to meet the educational needs of students with exceptionalities. Topics covered include: policies and laws related to children with disabilities, how to assess and evaluate both early childhood and elementary students who may have special needs, how to create an integrated classroom environment, how to develop differentiated curriculum and work with IEPs. Students will become knowledgeable in intervention strategies for children with medical needs, social and emotional needs, cognitive development needs, and communication and language needs.

    Course explores: the importance of teaching social studies in relation to diversity, multiculturalism and pluralism; national standards in social studies; how to make history come alive through teaching children to become “historical researchers”; and integration of social studies with other content areas. Course will provide practice in planning, teaching, assessment, differentiating social studies lesson plans; and making lessons reflective. Additionally, students will learn to integrate maps, globes, graphics, and technology in their instruction
  • 3.00 Credits

    Students will explore the interconnectedness of math and science concepts and principles, engaging in hands-on units and activities. Attention will be given to math and science national and state standards as students develop lesson plans.
