This course explores German cultural topics through the lens of films from the Golden age of German cinema during the Weimar era in the 1920's and early 1930's. Viewed from theperspective of technical possibility, of market considerations and entertainment values, as well as instruments of social criticism, these films from the black and white era introduce students to the work of directors and actors who began their careers in German and, in many instances, were forced to flee Germany in 1933 and resumed their work in Hollywood.
