REL 3363: Introduction to Early Christian Thought
3.00 Credits
University of Tulsa
This course surveys the first four centuries of Christian thought in the Greek and Latin churches after the New Testament period. We will study the emergence of doctrines (e.g., Christ, the Trinity), institutions (e.g., the church), and movements (e.g., asceticism), as well as the controversies that surround them. Orthodoxy and heresy are fluid and not yet well defined during this period, and students are encouraged to evaluate the respective positions of the thinkers within the proper historical context. By the end of the course students will have a general understanding of historical and doctrinal developments in the early Christian church, and a critical appreciation of the controversies and events that shape this formative period of Christianity.
