An introduction to respiratory therapy, this course includes infection control and sterilization, physical assessment and chart review, radiologic assessment of the chest, gas physics, medical gas therapy and delivery systems, humidity and aerosol therapy, IPPB, incentive spirometry and coughing techniques, chest physiotherapy, manual resuscitators, and CPR. Lab fee $7.00. Permission of Program Director required.
-
2.00 Credits
A continuation of HSRT 2114, this course offers information on blending devices, arterial and capillary blood gas sampling techniques and analysis, venipuncture, electrocardiology, capnography, transcutaneous O2/CO2 monitoring, apnea monitors, defibrillators, bronchial hygiene, airway management, endotrachial intubation and extubation, pulmonary rehabilitation, and homecare. Lab fee $7.00. Prerequisites: HSRT 2114, HSRT 2103. Permission of Program Director required.
-
1.00 Credits
Includes key organizational and operational elements of health care delivery organization and delivery of respiratory care services in the acute care setting, as well as ethics and legal standards applied to the practice of respiratory care.
-
3.00 Credits
A continuation of HSRT 2114, this course offers information on the principle of mechanical ventilation and the effects of positive pressure ventilation. The operating modes, initiation of and monitoring of mechanical ventilation is also covered. The student will become proficient in interpreting waveforms in mechanical ventilation, management of mechanical ventilation, and weaning techniques, as well as representation on various mechanical ventilators. Lab fee $7.00. Prerequisites: HSRT 2114, HSRT 2103. Permission of Program Director required.
-
4.00 Credits
Respiratory therapy procedures are practiced in specialty areas of the hospital with supplemental information received through physician lectures. The clinical experience is coordinated to cover the areas of infection control and sterilization, physical assessment of the chest and chart review, radiologic assessment of the chest, medical gas administration and delivery systems, humidity and aerosol therapy, pulmonary function testing, IPPB therapy, incentive spirometry and coughing techniques, chest physiotherapy, manual resuscitators, and CPR. Prerequisite: HSRT 2114. Permission of Program Director required.
-
3.00 Credits
An in-depth study of the function of the respiratory system. It includes pulmonary mechanics and circulation, ventilation, gas transport, newborn physiology, neuro-control of breathing, and acid-base balance. Prerequisites: LFSC 2424. Permission of Program Director required.
-
3.00 Credits
This course is a comprehensive yet practical understanding of current information in respiratory pharmacology. This course provides a sound basis of theoretic concepts of the physiopharmacologic functions of the lungs, heart, and kidneys applicable to both the chronic pulmonary disease ambulatory patient and the intensive care unit respiratory failure victim. A wide range of classes of drugs is given full consideration with emphasis on practical choices of individual agents for individual situations. Also discussed are new drugs likely to become available in the near future. Prerequisites: LFSC 2424. Permission of Program Director required.
-
4.00 Credits
Continuation of clinical experience as in HSRT 2224 with intensive care involvement. Physician lectures and clinical practice are coordinated to cover blending devices and oxygen analyzers, capillary blood gas sampling techniques and analysis, mechanical ventilation, bronchial hygiene, neonatal and pediatric respiratory care, and non-invasive monitoring techniques. Prerequisites: HSRT 2224. Permission of Program Director required.
-
3.00 Credits
An in-depth study of specific respiratory diseases covering the method of diagnosis, treatment, clinical manifestation, prognosis, pathology, and incidence of occurrence in the general population. Permission of Program Director required.
-
4.00 Credits
A continuation of HSRT 2324, respiratory therapy procedures are practiced in specialty areas of the hospital. Physician lectures and clinical experience are coordinated to cover tracheal intubation and extubation airway management, arterial blood gas sampling techniques, critical care monitoring, mechanical ventilation, and pulmonary rehabilitation. Prerequisite: HSRT 2213, HSRT 2324. Permission of Program Director required.
