13.00 Credits
This course will primarily be spent in the clinical setting. Students will spend in excess of 200 hours in ER and EMS settings completing assigned clinical competencies. Students will meet weekly in order to review clinical experience and review all aspects of the paramedic program, while correlating them with actual clinical experiences. Prerequisites: HSEM 1116, HSEM 1214, HSEM 2113, HSEM 2116, HSEM 2214, HSEM 2215.

This course will cover the pathophysiology, assessment and management of trauma related patients and scenes. Students will also cover operational aspects such as rescue, hazardous materials response, and mass casualty incidents. Prerequisites: HSEM 1116, HSEM 1214, HSEM 2113, HSEM 2116.

5.00 Credits
This course will cover disease and injuries affecting special patient populations as well as their assessment and management. Patient populations include pediatrics, obstetrics and geriatrics. Clinical hours will be spent in pediatric, labor and delivery and psychiatric units. Prerequisites: HSEM 1116, HSEM 1214, HSEM 2113, HSEM 2116, HSEM 2214.

This course covers the history of health information/medical records and their content and format; technical evaluation and analysis of the record/information; admission procedures; methods in numbering, filing, retrieval and retention; the role of the professional organization, medical ethics, and the roles of health professionals and their relationships. Laboratory Fee: $7.00 Prerequisites: Must enroll concurrently in HSBC 1113. Permission of Program Director required.

Emphasizes the confidential nature of the medical record/ health information and the duty of all health care personnel to protect this confidentiality. A study of laws pertaining to health information/medical records and the principles involved in release of information. Introduces the court system, federal and state, and reviews current health care legislation. Emphasizes commonly used legal terminology. Permission of Program Director required. period in which psychomotor application of the concepts; principles and skills are practiced and expanded upon. Individuals who are licensed as LPNs, paramedics and some military medics may be eligible for partial credit by examination or by extrainstitutional learning for this course. Lab fee: $7.00. Acceptance into the Nursing Science program is required for enrollment. Permission of the Program Director is required for enrollment.

This course presents basic statistical techniques, rates, and percentages commonly used in the health care setting and defines specific terminology as it affects health information/medical record and hospital functions. Permission of Program Director required.

Offers the coordination and supervision of clinical learning experiences in affiliating health care facilities. Hours may vary. Permission of Program Director required.

This course involves the study of specialized health information/medical record applications, including longterm care, home health, psychiatric, and ambulatory care. Review of tumor registry and the cancer program. Permission of Program Director required.

3.00 Credits
This course provides an in-depth presentation of coding and indexing procedures with special emphasis placed on ICD- 9-CM (International Classification of Disease, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification). Information/medical record abstracting and use of computerization in the coding process as well as DRG determination will be covered. Laboratory Fee: $7.00. Prerequisites: HSBC 1113, HSBC 1104 prior or concurrently enrolled. Permission of Program Director required.
