    The course provides a study of embryonic development of the face and oral cavity, the basic tissues composing human organs, histology of dental tissues, normal tooth development, and dental anomalies. Dental anatomy focuses on form and function of permanent and deciduous human teeth. Emphasis is place on identification of teeth and on knowledge of tooth form and contour for instrument adaptation.     Composition and properties of materials commonly used in dentistry with laboratory practice in their preparation and manipulation. Laboratory emphasis on legalized functions for the dental hygienist relating to dental materials. Lab fee $7.00. Permission of Program Director required.

    Principles of dental radiography including radiation physics and biology and procedures for radiation protection; techniques for exposing, processing, and mounting dental radiographs; patient management; special and accessory radiographic techniques. Lab fee $7.00. Permission of Program Director required. supervision of pathologists, staff technologists, and CLT education coordinator. Prerequisite(s): HSCL 2412. Permission of Program Director required. This is the second clinical course for the One Year Option.

    Study of the supporting structures of the teeth in the health and disease states with emphasis on clinical appearances, cause of periodontal disease, types of periodontal diseases, and histopathogensis, and microorganisms in gingivitis and periodontitis. Also includes instruction in use of Gracey curets and their sharpening. Permission of Program Director required.

    Continuation of HSDH 1205. Introduction of additional patient treatment procedures; adaptation of clinical procedures in special patient care; clinical application of radiography and periodontics; laboratory experience in administration of nitrous oxide analgesia and local anesthesia. Seminars on additional subjects related to dental hygiene practice. Assignments at affiliated clinics will be arranged. Lab fee $7.00. Permission of Program Director required.

    Introduction to the scientific research process through the scientific method, manipulation of variables, research designs, data collection, interpretation of data, and presentation of findings. Role of fluoride in public health and the prevalence and incidence of dental diseases. Introduction to the learning process in relation to public health education. Active participation in community projects is also required. Permission of Program Director required.

    Introduction to general pathology; clinical application to disease of the oral cavity including manifestations of inflammation, degenerative changes, neoplastic disease and developmental anomalies; visual differentiation between normal and abnormal oral tissues and conditions. Permission of Program Director required.

    A continuation of HSDH 1241 including the use of various periodontal assessment tools in addition to the different types of Gracey curettes and application of advanced instrumentation techniques, ultrasonic instrumentation, phases of periodontal therapy including treatment planning and principles of scaling and root planning principles of periodontal surgery as well as the use of chemotherapeutics, and the role of occlusion. Also includes the immunologic aspects and the systemic manifestations of periodontal disease and the recognition of treatment of periodontal emergencies. Permission of Program Director required.
