BIOL 395: Teaching Assistantship

1-3 s.h. Provides college-level experience in teaching, laboratory design and preparation in an upper level Biology course. Student works directly under the instructor(s) of the course selected for the experience, and may be assigned special readings or teaching projects related to the particular subject. Depending on relevancy, a student may expect to teach selected topics, tutor, set up and dismantle lab materials, or work in the greenhouse, animal room, prep room, or outdoors as agreed upon at the beginning of the semester by the student and instructor. Credit for BIOL 395 may not be applied toward the requirements for the Biology major or minor. Graded on pass/fail basis only. Prerequisites: CWE 1, two College at Oneonta biology courses and meet minimum requirements stipulated on the campus teaching assistantship application.

This course is designed to provide a college level experience for students who are exceptionally qualified to undertake appropriate responsibilities and demands including such activities as tutoring, assisting in research and/or participating in classroom presentations. Students must be recommended by a Divisional faculty member and have completed the appropriate coursework required for the particular assistantship. The precise responsibilities, amount of credit, and grading criteria will be agreed to and outlined in writing prior to the beginning of the course. A student may earn 1 to 3 s.h. of credit during a single assistantship depending upon specific responsibilities and demands. The course is repeatable, with a cumulative maximum of 3 s.h. of credit allowed. Prerequisites: 3.0 major and overall GPA, passing grade on CWE, JrS, and Division permission.
