  • 4.00 Credits

4 s.h. A biology of insects including their natural history, anatomy, and functional morphology. Classification and ecology of forms found locally. Preparation of collections; field and laboratory experiences; term paper required. ( LA) Prerequisite: 6 s.h. of BIOL.
  • 4.00 Credits

4 s.h. The biology of vertebrate animals, including evolution, classification, and behavior of all major classes. Laboratories stress structural features, while field trips emphasize ecology, behavior, and identification of local forms. Three mandatory all-day Saturday field trips. ( LA) Prerequisite: BIOL 105 or BIOL 200.
  • 3.00 Credits

3 s.h. This course will provide a broad introduction to the study of birds. Topics will include bird classification, evolution, distribution, morphology, ecology and behavior. The laboratory section is designed to allow students to learn about the structure of birds and to identify the various families and species, focusing especially on those found in the eastern USA. Indoor laboratories focus on bird structure, anatomy and classification. Field excursions to a variety of habitats will emphasize identification and natural history of local species. These will provide opportunity to observe birds in a variety of habitats and will emphasize identification and natural history of local species. Students will get the opportunity to observe mist-netting and banding of song birds. Lecture-Laboratory. Two lecture exams plus final. Laboratories will be assessed using a variety of assignments and quizzes. Students must be prepared to attend a weekend field trip and also two Saturday excursions. These trips will usually take place in the second half of the semester. Students will be expected to have appropriate field clothes for winter conditions (including field boots). They will also need access to a reasonable pair of binoculars (a pair can be borrowed from the biology department, but keen students may prefer to purchase their own). ( LA, CPA) Prerequisite: BIOL 112, or BIOL 100, or BIOL 102.
  • 3.00 Credits

3 s.h. The ecology and general biology of the marine biota. Stresses life histories and trophic relationships, adaptations for marine life, and limitations imposed by marine environments. ( LA) Prerequisite: BIOL 105 or BIOL 200 or OCEA 210.
  • 3.00 Credits

3 s.h. A brief look at how the study of biology has changed over time, from prehistoric man to the 21st century. Emphasis will be given to developments in techniques, instruments, thought processes and information sharing. Students will research individual projects and complete a series of writing assignments. ( LA, WS2) Prerequisites: BIOL 100 or BIOL 105 or BIOL 200.
  • 4.00 Credits

4 s.h. Interrelations between organisms and their environments at the population, community, and ecosystem levels; laboratory and field exercises cover population dynamics, productivity, and community structure in aquatic and terrestrial environments. ( LA) Prerequisites: BIOL 105 or BIOL 200.
  • 3.00 Credits

3 s.h. A survey of environmental pollution for non-biology majors. Covers major pollution types and impacts on plants, animals, and non-living components of the environment. ( LA) Prerequisites: high school biology and 3 s.h. in college science.
  • 1.00 - 4.00 Credits

1-4 s.h. One to two-week experiences in regional biology offered off campus or at the Biological Field Station. Content varies. Students may enroll in several topics, but no more than 4 s.h. may be applied to the biology major. Costs shared by students. ( LA) Prerequisites: BIOL 100, 105 or 200, and permission of instructor.
  • 1.00 Credits

1 s.h. Provides college-level experience in teaching, laboratory design, and preparation in a 100-level Biology course. Students works directly under a laboratory instructor of the course. Activities may include laboratory exercise presentations, setting up and dismantling of lab materials, and tutoring. Credit for BIOL 295 may not be applied toward the requirements for the Biology major or minor. Graded on pass/fail basis only. Prerequisites: CWE 1, one College at Oneonta biology course and meet minimum requirements stipulated on the campus teaching assistantship application.
  • 1.00 - 4.00 Credits

1-4 s.h. Reports, discussions, lectures, and library research on current topics in specific fields of science. Cannot apply more than 2 s.h. of seminar to biology elective requirement. ( LA) Prerequisites: 3 s.h. BIOL and permission of instructor.
