    3 s.h. A multicultural course. Introduces methods and approaches of Women's Studies from varied feminist perspectives. Surveys what is happening to women in the contemporary world; the various feminist theories; the social constructions of gender; sexual harassment. Surveys various aspects of women's lives past and present, such as women and psychology, business, philosophy, religion, the law, literature, art, the popular media, the family, etc. ( LA, WS2)

    3 s.h. This course will explore a range of medical and psychosocial health issues across the lifespan that are of special concern to women; identify risk and protective factors and issues of gender roles in women's health. Consideration is given to racial/ethnic, sexual and socio-economic diversity. Will be offered once a year. ( LA) Prerequisite: SoS.

    3 s.h. This course studies women in literature, history, popular culture, and life who refused to be willing victims of violence and/or subjugation. Readings and discussions focus on women from ancient literature such as Demeter, Medea, Boudicea - Queen of the Icceni, Judith from the Old Testament, as well as women in fairy tales and legend. Feminist criticism includes the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft, Naomi Wolf, Cameryn Manheim, and a collection of essays edited by Rose Weitz. Study of contemporary women focuses on the abused wife, women in sports, and women who challenge restrictive culture attitudes about female beauty. The role of women in music videos is explored by examining work by Madonna, Pink, and Janet Jackson. When time permits, television personalities Xena, Buffy and Dark Angel are also studied. Students examine the actions and reactions of all these women and discuss their motives, methods, and degrees of effectiveness of their behavior.     3 s.h. This class will study the stories of various forms of the archetypal Wild Woman, including witches, whores, saints, mothers, teachers, green women, healers, warriors, poets and madwomen. Examination will focus on their qualities and functions and what happens to them if they push the boundaries of accepted and expected female behavior. This course will cover books, short handouts, fairy tales, films, and videos. Exploration of the question of the role, function, and reception of strong women will also include analysis of music videos. This course is designed to facilitate the development of critical thinking and expression of that thought, either through discussion or writing. Process Writing will be taught throughout the semester. Prerequisites: Passing college writing exam, SoS and 3 s.h. Humanities (or permission from instructor). ( LA, WS2)

    3 s.h. This course will use a multidisciplinary approach to survey the contemporary experience of women of color in the United States. We will explore the lives of African American, Asian American, Latinas and Native American Women in the context of historical, economic and political arrangements that give meaning to and shape their lives. We will also examine the cultural patterns which under-lie race, class, sexuality, and gender-based inequalities as a basic element of contemporary society. Focusing on individual and community experiences, we will assess the dynamic variation in women's class, racial-ethnic and gender identity formation, their differential treatment based on race, class, and gender at different levels of society, and their responses to the structural arrangements that affect their lives.     3 s.h. This course studies outstanding women travelers, writers, scientists, politicians, explorers, artists, and crusaders, typically focusing on one theme. The perspectives of women going "against the grain"allows a better understanding of contemporary issues affected by gender, class, race, and nationality. It should also expand the horizon of possibility for students, particularly women. ( LA)

This course uses films and videos to explore the question of women and representation in the contemporary United States: cultural conflicts, social and political agencies, textual contradictions, and ideological symbols. The course emphasizes the ways in which such representations of women have been understood in terms of race and how this has intersected with social class and sexuality. Coursework and class discussion will be grounded in recent feminist film criticism and cultural theories by women of all races. ( LA)

    3 s.h. This course is the second part to WMST 290. The course uses films to explore the question of women's sexuality in the contemporary United States with special attention to cultural conflicts, social and political agency, textual contradictions, and ideological symbols. The course primarily examines the ways in which such representations of women have been understood in terms of sexuality and how this sexualization has intersected race. Coursework and class discussion will be grounded in recent feminist film criticism. ( LA) Prerequisite: None.
