In this course, Ways of Knowing and Learning, students become familiar with theories of knowledge and learning in addition to strategies and techniques for learning and thinking. The course will cover insights from cognitive psychology, educational theory, and philosophy, various conceptions of learning styles and critical thinking. Additionally, students engage in concrete ways to approach their studies in order to become actively involved in their own learning process. All activities in the course explore the theoretical foundations of effective learning. The course is partially online and employs a technology-facilitated inquiry-based learning approach. Students who have completed at least one semester and are struggling with their academics would most benefit from the course.

Using concepts grounded in the social sciences as an analytical framework, the course will develop skills for moving beyond ethnocentrism to an appreciation of diversity in society. This framework will be established through readings, lectures and exercises derived from a number of different disciplines: anthropology, African American studies, history, linguistics, performance studies, political science, psychology and sociology. The course focus is further elaborated and explored through literature, autobiography, essays, films, journals and theatre.

This course is similar to an independent research project within specific disciplines. It is designed for students who participate in several of the university sponsored international projects; such as the summer travel associated with the Heinz award or the travel associated with the ongoing work in Bioko. It is not limited, however, to such work. Any student who has developed a significant project and has a faculty sponsor is eligible for this course. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor (or faculty sponsor) only. Instructors are to review the guidelines with the student and approve the project prior to the research being undertaken. This is similar to the procedure for an independent study course, however, the form for ID281 must be approved by the Associate Dean of Internationalization.
