Survey of the art of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Particular attention is paid to Caravaggio and Bernini and the impact of the Counter reformation; and to Rembrandt and Vermeer and the development of portraiture, genre and landscape painting in the Protestant Netherlands. Field trips to The Philadelphia Museum of Art to study their Baroque collection are included. Offered in 2005 and alternate years.

AH 323: Contemporary Curatorial Practice

This seminar provides students with a broad overview of mid-to-late 20th century and contemporary art through the lens of exhibition-making. Organized around a final project (a proposal for a thematic exhibition), topics include evolutionof gallery and exhibition contexts, installation design, the rhetorical impact of artworks on each other, and the exhibition as mode of interpretation and research. The first half of the course will introduce students to a wide variety of contemporary artists and how their work is contextualized by the exhbition format. Midway through the semester, students are responsible for an oral presentation on a postwar artist (or movement). The final project focuses on curating a hypothetical exhibition that will take into consideration installation design and the relationship between selected artworks and a 1000 word essay. In addition, to two field trips to regional exhibition spaces, two guest speakers are invited to address the class over the semester. Six 2-3 page papers are assigned throughout the semester.
