Study of basic philosophical issues as expressed in significant works of literature. Includes such leading figures of the 19th and 20th centuries as Nietzsche, Santayana, Kierkegaard, Sartre, Camus and others. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor. Offered in 2005 and alternate years.

Survey of political theory through the classic writings of Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Bentham, Marx, Rawls and others. Includes rights, the public interest, social contract, liberty, equality and justice. Offered in 2005 and alternate years.

An exploration of how all the basic ethical perspectives, such as egoism, relativism, utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue theory paradigms, can be found in and illustrated by films. Some specific ethical dilemma paradigms, such as truth versus loyalty, individual versus community, justice versus mercy, will be examined. About twelve films will be assigned, some to be viewed in class and some out of class. Students will do a mid-term and a final exam, two formal papers and other informal writing.

Study of theories of knowledge (skepticism, rationalism, empiricism, pragmatism), of theories of mind (dualist, materialist, functionalist) and associated concepts such as action, thinking, representation and consciousness. Presents readings from both classic and contemporary sources. Prerequisite: junior standing. Offered in 2007 and every third year.
