This course will look at the various artistic and cultural currents present in Sicily in the Medieval period, from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance, through the study of the monuments which illustrates the fascinating dialogue between the cultures and religions around the Mediterranean. The signs of this succession of cultures can still be clearly seen in Sicily today; from the Christian catacombs associated with the very origins of Christianity in the West and the splendid villas of the late Roman period, to the extraordinary Islamic buildings produced for the Norman Christian Kings of the island, to the Spanish-inspired aristocratic houses of Palermo and Syracuse, and the work of Antonello da Messina, who breaks with the late Gothic style popular in Sicily, and actively learns from and contributes to both the Flemish artistic traditiona and the Italian Renaissance. We will look at the new theories about town-planning which develop after the disastrous earthquake of 1693, and the influence of the Church and the religious orders on the re-building.
