It will describe the three-part stress response (catecholamine, HPA axis, and immune response), and how maternal stress and inflammation increase the risk of depression and other mood disorders. In addition, a range of complementary and alternative treatments will be described including Omega-3 fatty acids, exercise, SAM-e, herbal antidepressants and antidepressant medications. All treatments will be discussed regarding their impact on breastfeeding.
