Covers basic concepts of adult learning as it applies to college, the role of technology in education as well as a review of the college's policies and procedures. Contains case studies and class/group discussions to enhance understanding.

This course introduces students to Maintenance Reliability basics. It will state the difference between corrective maintenance and preventative maintenance. Define and breakdown system functions, failure modes and root causes of the specific systems.

Owens Community College Nurse Assistant Training Course (STNA) is an Ohio Department of Health approved training course that prepares the student to perform basic patient care in Long Term Care facilities, hospitals, hospice centers and home health settings. This is a mandatory training course for Ohio Nurse Assistants who work in Long Term Care. This course prepares the student to take the Ohio Competency Evaluation Exam. This 75 hour course includes 16 hours of clinical training and 59 hours of lecture and skill laboratory practice.

Deals with supervisory and team leadership skills in this introductory course and is designed for student self-assessment. Creates an awareness of the skills a supervisor needs, and teaches tools and techniques, which can be applied to the work environment.

Theory and application of the necessary functions of a beginning scrub and assistant circulating surgical technologist or sterile processor is introduced along with all hazards preparation. Specific scientific principles that underlie the daily work in the operating room and central service departments will be discussed. Students will be exposed to the Healthcare Facility organization and management, the physical environment, decontamination of instruments and supplies along with sterilization of the same. Aseptic technique and its application to the operating room along with prevention of infection utilizing standard and universal standards will be covered.

6.00 Credits
Fundamentals of Surgical Technology are covered. Responsibilities of the surgical technologist are defined. Basic concepts of perioperative case management, allowing the student to practice safe patient care in the lab setting, along with principles of operating room techniques to include pathophysiology and robotics. Emphasis is placed on the surgical scrub, gowning and gloving, establishing and maintaining a sterile field, draping materials, suture, and needles. Students will develop skills in taking vital signs, transporting, positioning, and prepping the surgical patient.

Provides introductory experiences in the clinical setting under the direct supervision of a Surgical Technologist or other appropriate assigned personnel by the hospital coordinator. The focus is on level 1 cases in the areas of general, gynecology, genitourinary, orthopedics and ENT. The student has the opportunity to apply theory learned in the laboratory and lecture setting. A weekly reflection is required as well as visitation by faculty.

Provides the student with the opportunity to use knowledge and skills learned in the classroom and laboratory setting. The experience is conducted under the supervision of a faculty member who assists the student in developing a work experience plan and who visits the student at the clinical site. Periodic reports are required. Students work a total of 180 hours at a position approved by the program manager of surgical technology. The position is related to sterile processing, central supply and distribution, and instrument processing for the operating room. The faculty member and the department supervisor evaluate the student's work performance at the completion of the 180 hours.

Provides intermediate experiences in the clinical setting under the direct supervision of a Surgical Technologist or other appropriate assigned personnel by the hospital coordinator. The focus is on level 2 cases in the areas of general, gynecology, genitourinary, orthopedics, vascular, ophthalmic, reconstructive, neurologic, thoracic and ENT. The student has the opportunity to apply theory learned in the laboratory and lecture in this setting. A weekly reflection is required as well as visitation by faculty.

4.00 Credits
Theory and application to procedures will be given in relationship to specialty areas ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial, and orthopedics. Instrumentation, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology are reviewed in relationship to these specialty areas.
