This course will use a sociological approach to the study of social problems, introducing the student to a variety of sociological perspectives. Within this framework, the student will study and analyze contemporary social issues and problems within American society. (Social and Behavioral Science elective).

Provides students with competing sociological perspectives supported by research data on the advantages and disadvantages of diverse family structures. Emphasis is placed on the ongoing debate within the discipline on whether the traditional family is on a continued state of decline or if the family is changing to meet the demands of the modern world. Special attention is placed on the effects of out-of-wedlock births, divorce, and single-parenting on children. (Social and Behavioral Science Elective)

This course introduces the student to many diverse populations within the United States-Native Americans, Hispanic-Americans, African-Americans, Asian-Americans and Euro-Americans. It primarily focuses on the social interaction of these ethnic and racial groups, the concepts of race and social class; and issues related to gender, ability and hate groups. (Social and Behavioral Sciences Elective).

Introduction to the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Development of elementary communicative skills with a balanced emphasis on speaking, listening, reading and writing. Continuation of the introduction to the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Expansion of the communicative skills begun in Spanish 111 with a balanced emphasis on speaking, listening, reading and writing. Further presentation of materials to encourage appropriate cross-cultural responses. Laboratory practice may be required. (Arts and Humanities elective).

Further development in the areas of listening, speaking and writing, as well as emphasis on communicative skills through personalized, open-ended activities. Continued presentation of grammatical structures introduced in SPA 112 and expansion of students' awareness of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Laboratory practice may be required. Intermediate language course with a balanced emphasis on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Review of the fundamental structures and progress into more complex grammatical structures and communicative skills. Exploration of diverse aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. 4.00 Credits
Theory and application of the necessary functions of the sterile processing technician are introduced as well as their role within the surgical department and the hospital organization. Students will learn various types of instrumentation spanning all of the surgical specialties. They will cover the use of instrumentation, POU decontamination, inspection, packaging, and various sterilization techniques. Sterile storage systems, case cart preparation, and department delivery practices and systems will also be covered. Students will demonstrate the use of chemical, mechanical and biological indicators. Hazards concerning the chemical agents, mechanical equipment, and biological material in the sterile processing department will be covered including the proper standard precautions. Students will be introduced to the basic principles of aseptic technique and infection control.

2.00 Credits
Provides 180 hours of hands on experience that allows the integration of the learned concepts related to the field of sterile processing into real life practice. Students will participate in all areas of the sterile processing department including decontamination, instrument set preparation, sterilization, case cart preparation, technologies for storage and distribution, and quality control and monitoring processes.
