PTA 101: Intro to the Phys Therap Asst

This course presents the history and principles of physical therapy. The roles and responsibilities of the physical therapist assistant in relation to the physical therapist as described by the American Physical Therapy Association is discussed. Vital sign assessment, draping, positioning, bed mobility, transfers, gait training, documentation, and infection control as performed by the physical therapist assistant are introduced. Laboratory sessions provide application of learned skills.

This course provides a foundation for the application of skills and techniques related to treatment of common musculoskeletal disorders, diseases, surgeries and injuries. Introduction to physical therapy related measurements and progression of treatment, cause and effect factors associated with selected common orthopedic disorders and injuries and healing. Upper and lower extremities, spine and trunk including orthotics and prosthetics, documentation for orthopedic disorders and treatment, special considerations across the lifespan and cultural considerations are discussed.
