  • 2.00 Credits

    Provides the student with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. The experience is conducted under the supervision of a faculty member who assists the student in developing a work experience plan and who visits the student at the worksite. Periodic reports are required. Students work a total of at least 150 hours (usually paid) over the course of the work experience at a position obtained through their own initiative and approved by the office administration internship instructor. Required on-campus seminars (16 hours) are scheduled. Prerequisite:    OAD 102 and OAD 110 and OAD 270 and IST 132

    This course is an introduction to the domain of OT practice which outlines the profession's purview and the areas in which its members have an established body of knowledge and expertise. An introduction of the history and philosophical base of the profession of occupational therapy are presented. Focus on performance of occupation including the analysis of the dynamic intersection of activity demands, performance skills, performance patterns, client factors, context and environment, and areas of occupation that support health and participation in life through engagement in occupation.

    This course will explain the uniqueness of the therapeutic relationship and describe how the use of self is used as one of the tools of therapy. Class activities will enable the student to develop self-awareness and gain skills for effective therapeutic relationships and growth in professional behaviors, professional development, and advocacy. Students will demonstrate that essential to the domain of OT practice is advocacy utilizing the AOTA Code of Ethics, and Core Values and Attitudes of Occupational Therapy. Students will gain foundational skills in documentation, health literacy, evidence based practice, promoting interprofessional relationships, and mentoring. This course offers students the opportunity to discuss the relationship among typical development, areas of performance, and contexts.

    Building from the foundations established in Domain and Process I, this course presents theories, models of practice, and frames of reference that underlie the practice of occupational therapy. Methods and techniques for screening, assessing, and evaluation for occupational performance strengths and problems will be introduced as the role of the OTA in the OT Process is reinforced. Professional advocacy and life long learning skills are included. Prerequisite:    OTA 110 and OTA 111 Corequisite:    OTA 121 and OTA 122

    This course will provide OTA students with an overview and foundation of pediatric practice skills for occupational therapy assistants. Considerations will include contexts and client factors that may affect performance in the areas of occupation. This course focuses on the theoretical basis and practice application of treatment with critical inquiry into intervention planning and implementation. Prerequisite:    OTA 110 and OTA 111 Corequisite:    OTA 120 and OTA 122

    This course will provide OTA students with an overview and foundation of physical dysfunction practice skills for occupational therapy assistants. Considerations will include contexts and client factors that may affect performance in the areas of occupation. This course focuses on the theoretical basis and practice application of treatment with critical inquiry into intervention planning and implementation. Prerequisite:    OTA 110 and OTA 111 Corequisite:    OTA 120 and OTA 121

    This course will provide OTA students with an overview and foundation of practice skills for occupational therapy assistants working with an aging population. Considerations will include contexts and client factors that may affect performance in the areas of occupation. This course focuses on the theoretical basis and practice application of treatment with critical inquiry into intervention planning and implementation. Prerequisite:    OTA 120 and OTA 121 and OTA 122
  • 2.00 Credits

    Building from the foundations established in Domain and Process I and II, students will continue to analyze occupations of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living skills. Students will have the opportunity to practice intervention planning and implementation for individual and group interactions. Students will build practice skills in documentation, emerging practice trends, assistive technologies, assistive devices, professional behaviors and advocacy skills.

    This course will provide OTA students with an overview and foundation for the practice of occupational therapy for persons with mental health problems. Considerations will include contexts and client factors that may affect performance in the areas of occupation. This course focuses on the theoretical basis and practice application of group treatments with critical inquiry into intervention planning and implementation. Prerequisite:    OTA 211 Corequisite:    OTA 223
  • 4.00 Credits

    Students will participate in a traditional or community-based fieldwork setting. Community based methods of service delivery will be examined and critiqued. This course provides students with the opportunity to not only assess various situations, but also utilize their knowledge to demonstrate clinical reasoning. A multitude of classroom activities are designed to groom students for successful level I fieldwork completion. Prerequisite:    OTA 211 Corequisite:    OTA 222
