Hands-on experience will be provided on networked computers, or online, in the Windows (no MACs) environment using the Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel.

    An introductory course for students who are interested in the computer field and programs of study in IST. This course explores foundational concepts related to computer math skills, computer hardware and software, networking, databases, computer programming, information systems, and data security. This course introduces students to real-world tasks associated with various IT fields. Students will gain a broad understanding of career and educational options that will help define a program of study choice. Students will take the TestOut IT Fundamentals Pro certification in this course. Students will be prepared to take the CompTIA IT Fundamentals (FC0-U61) certification.

    This course introduces the Python language using key computer programming concepts and techniques. Students are introduced to core programming concepts like data structures, conditionals, loops, variables, and functions. This course utilizes the integrated development environment (IDE) of IDLE for writing and running Python and gets students coding quickly. Students are encouraged to explore PyCharm and Eclipse IDEs as well. It also provides hands-on coding exercises employing commonly used data structures, writing custom functions, and reading and writing to files. Python is a language which has a simple to learn syntax, and a powerful set of available libraries. It is an interpreted language, containing a rich programming environment which includes a robust debugger and profiler. While it is easy for beginning coders to learn, it is widely used in many scientific areas for data exploration and in data science.

    This class introduces the process of using the Internet for research with a special emphasis on the Internet's strategic value for academia, business, and industry. In a hands-on approach, students will learn what is available on the Internet and how to perform critical research functions efficiently and effectively on-line. The ability to access and navigate the Internet will provide the students with an opportunity not only to expand their knowledge but also their perspective in an increasingly changing computer based world.

    Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is key to modern web browsing. Hypertext Markup Language is the essential language that browsers utilize to present information on a webpage. In this course, HTML is introduced along with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) which improvs page layout and style. Students learn the fundamentals of HTML and CSS in this course. Modern web development utilizes these tools to make the web development process more efficient, which results in greater productivity. It is vital to have a good understanding of how to set up and implement a modern web development environment. Students will gain hands-on experience building simple web pages with hypertext links and graphics. Included is an overview of techniques that enhance and facilitate page creation. Students will learn how to share and manipulate data on the web and in applications.

    This course will reinforce and expand on Excel and Access topics covered in IST131. The intermediate and advanced subjects covered are related to data management issues found in many professions. A problem solving approach will be utilized to analyze and solve real-world case studies. This course is appropriate for any student wishing to gain a more in-depth knowledge of Excel and Access instead of taking IST235 and IST236. Prerequisite:    IST 131

    This course introduces students to the topics and skills necessary to pass the industry recognized CompTIA A+ certification exams. Topics include computer hardware and operating systems. This course covers the basics of networking, virtualization, cloud computing, active directory, security, and mobile and wireless computing. Students will also learn how to upgrade and maintain equipment and operating systems and to troubleshoot and repair non-functioning devices. Utilizing hands-on labs and/or simulations, students will be able to demonstrate the IT tasks employers seek in a PC Technician. Students will take the TestOut PC Pro certification exam.

    Introduces the student to applying basic computer programming concepts including program design, algorithms, control structures, data structures, and object oriented programming (OOP) using the Microsoft Visual Studio interactive development environment.

    Expands on Microsoft Visual Studio programing with emphasis on more complex Visual Studio concepts. Includes planning, writing, and debugging an application, graphics, custom controls, interfacing with databases, arrays, menus, dialog boxes, multiple forms, and error handling. Emphasis is on business applications, team programming and visual solutions. Prerequisite:    IST 135
