This is the newly published and just recently implemented set of guidelines, codes, and descriptions used by mental health professionals for establishing differential diagnoses for the clients/patients they assess and treat. The subject will be addressed in depth through reading and studying the DSM-IV manual. In addition, attention will be paid to various settings and related contexts which apply to the use of the DSM-IV. The areas of interviewing, treatment planning, goal setting, and outcomes are expecially pertinent to better understanding the functions and nature of the diagnostic process. A separate, but intertwined set of factors, such as legal, political, cultural, ethical, and economic considerations will also be included in the class focus.
