This course is focused on the decipherment of ancient Maya hieroglyphs and their archaeological context. Recent decipherments are reviewed. The analysis and interpretation of the glyphs includes an evaluation of texts written by the ancient Maya, evaluation of ethnohistoric records and a review of the languages still spoken in the Maya area and used in the glyphs in their archaic form.
