Prerequisite: BIOL 2220, MSTH 1100; or permission of instructor This course introduces pathology and provides a massage-based review of the anatomy and physiology of various body systems. It presents the physiological effects and therapeutic applications of massage procedures upon the various body systems, as well as procedures for reflex areas, abdominal massage, the treatment of fractures, hydro-therapy, and electrical modalities. Students will gain experience in performing the full-body massage sequence. (8 contact hours: 4 lecture, 4 lab)

Prerequisite: MSTH 1200 or permission of instructor This continuation of massage therapy introduces students to ethics and confidentiality issues in the patient/therapist relationship, and infectious disease prevention protocol. Students will evaluate and apply information gained in client history in assessment and therapy planning. Students will perform general massage in a clinical setting and correctly document therapy performed. (4 contact hours: 1 lecture, 3 lab)

Prerequisite: MSTH 1200 or permission of instructor This course continues the study of massage therapy by introducing the study of movement, measurement of joint movements with a goniometer, manual muscle strength testing, and proper documentation. It presents a detailed analysis of the planes, axes, torques, and levers involved in movement; articulations; muscle mechanics; neurological control of movement; kinesiology of specific joints; and functional movement in posture, gait, and balance. (5 contact hours: 2 lecture, 3 lab)

Prerequisite: MSTH 1300 (can be taken concurrently); or permission of instructor This course provides an overview of the employment options versus owning/operating a business in the massage therapy profession. Topics include development of a clinical practice with focus on customer satisfaction, market strategies, the value of professional affiliations, tax considerations, office management issues, and an introduction to insurance issues and workers compensation law. (2 contact hours)

Prerequisite: MSTH 1300 or permission of instructor This course continues the study of massage therapy by introducing therapeutic techniques for use on the elderly and on athletes. Students will also expand the skills learned in the general clinical setting and practice palpation of muscles and bony landmarks. This course presents philosophies and benefits of massage on the elderly and on athletes, communication skills, patient assessment, contraindications, safety concerns, confidentiality, professionalism, and proper documentation. This course includes an introduction to common musculoskeletal problems in the general population and effective treatment techniques. (7 contact hours: 1 lecture, 6 clinical)

Prerequisite: MSTH 1600 or permission of instructor This course provides a review of anatomy, physiology, physiological effects, therapeutic applications, contraindications to, and procedures of massage therapy in preparation for the State Medical Board Exam. (3 contact hours) MATHEMATICS Business and Engineering Mathematics courses are listed at the end of this section.

This course combines both group and individual voice instruction. It introduces basics of pitch accuracy, rhythm, music reading, breathing, posture, stagemanship, and group blending. The course requires no audition, but individual practice is necessary. Students may take this course up to two times for credit. (2 contact hours: 2 lab)

This introductory course in music reading and piano playing is geared to a group approach, using a 16-unit electronic keyboard laboratory. It includes beginning techniques for developing skills of harmonizing melodies, improvising, and identifying small intervals (up to the fifth). Students may practice on college instruments. (2 contact hours: 2 lab)

Prerequisite: MUSC 1050 or permission of instructor This course is a continuation of MUSC 1050 Group Piano I, developing (to an early intermediate level) skills of piano playing, music reading, harmonization of melodies, improvisation, and identifying larger intervals (the sixth and seventh). Students will also begin learning scales. The course uses a 16-unit electronic laboratory. Students may practice on college instruments. (2 contact hours: 2 lab)

This survey course provides an introduction to aesthetic and historic issues relating to musical works of major composers. The course emphasizes the art of listening to music. Topics include instruments of the orchestra as well as works and influences of composers. Students will study both instrumental and vocal works. This course requires no musical background or skills. (3 contact hours)
