Prerequisite: typing speed of 45 wpm with 3 or fewer errors on a 5 minute timing, admission to the Online Medical Transcription program This online course introduces students to the career of online medical transcription, goal setting, on-line learning, and documentation formats using speed typing software and medical reference texts. Students will review English composition, basic medical terminology, and the legal and liability issues for medical transcriptionists. Students will begin to use Microsoft Word shortcuts and macros and will participate in on-line discussion and use the Internet for research. (5 contact hours: 2 lecture, 3 lab)

Prerequisite: MDTR 2100 This online course continues basic level instruction and practice in transcription, concentrating in the areas of medical chart documentation formats, SOAP charting, proofreading, discharge summaries, history and physical formats, consultations, operative notes, and letters. Students will begin areas of specialized transcription: pharmacology, laboratory, hematology and the lymphatic system, cardiovascular, respiratory. Students will practice dictation of tests, procedures, and drugs relating to pharmacology, laboratory, hematology and the lymphatic system, and the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. (5 contact hours: 2 lecture, 3 lab)

Prerequisite: MDTR 2110 This online course begins intermediate level instruction and practice in transcription, concentrating in the areas of neurology, female reproductive system/OB/GYN, GU and male reproductive systems, gastrointestinal system, and continuation of the transcription of documents from previous courses. Students will dictate documents including laboratory, radiology, and surgical tests and reports, and history and physicals among others. Students will also practice word building and anatomical identifications in the areas listed above. (5 contact hours: 2 lecture, 3 lab)

Prerequisite: MDTR 2120 This online course continues intermediate level instruction and practice in transcription, concentrating in the areas of the senses, dermatology, endocrinology, geriatrics, and pediatrics. Students will transcribe documents studied in previous courses as well as tests and reports related to the areas listed above. Students will also practice word building and anatomical identifications in the areas listed above. (6 contact hours: 3 lecture, 3 lab)

Prerequisite: MDTR 2130 This online course begins the advanced level instruction and practice in transcription, concentrating in the areas of psychiatry, oncology/pathology, genetics, infectious diseases and emergency medicine. Students will continue transcription of documents studied in previous courses as well as practice word building and anatomical identifications in the areas listed above. (6 contact hours: 3 lecture, 3 lab)

Prerequisite: MDTR 2140 This advanced level online course continues transcription studied in previous courses and introduces the medical specialty areas of radiography, nuclear medicine, surgery, operative reports, and orthopedics. Students will discuss topics of professionalism such as entrepreneurship, resumes, interviewing, employment opportunities, and career management. The course also introduces ergonomic principles, federal privacy regulations, and employment laws. Prerequisite: MATH 0850 or MATH 0890 or placement test into MATH 1001 This course introduces students to engineering technology as well as the functions of the technical team. Students will learn and apply problem-solving methods through the use of simple mechanical and electrical instrumentation and general purpose computer software tools such as word processing and spreadsheet applications. Students will also use library resources and the Internet to complete assignments. Additionally students will study career alternatives in engineering technology.(4 contact hours: 1 lecture, 3 lab)

Prerequisite: MECT 1000 or permission of instructor Through a unique multi-disciplinary approach, this course, a continuation of MECT 1000 Introduction to Technology, introduces students to the combined use of technical writing (with an emphasis on standard usage), current hardware and software technology, and oral communications in the production of text, computer-generated documents, and oral presentations. The laboratory experience includes electronic and traditional research, application of the basic principles of technical writing, preparation and importation of text and graphics, and development of specification sheets, brochures, proposals, manuals, reports, and oral presentations. It also includes demonstration of the latest developments in hardware, software, advanced graphics, video, audio, and computer discs (CDs) relating to technical communications.
