Prerequisite: ECED 1130, ECED 1530, ECED 1650, ECED 1800; or permission of instructor This course specializes in an integrated approach to creative experiences appropriate to a child's total development. It includes a study of the content and values, and varied media for meaningful experiences in art, music, rhythms, dramatics, creative movement, and imagination development. Students will practice the construction and presentation of creative materials and activities in a laboratory situation and will test them with children. Students must complete 20 hours of fieldwork for this course.(4 contact hours)

It explores pre-reading, reading, pre-writing, writing, and language development as well as current reading and phonics trends. Students must complete fieldwork for this course. (3 contact hours)

Students will explore developmentally-appropriate activities, materials, and practices that enhance the early care and education of infants and toddlers. The course focuses on prime times for learning and language acquisition, high-quality early environments, foundations for literacy, and the principles of working with diverse family cultures in a variety of early educational settings.(3 contact hours)

This course examines school-age child care programs with a focus on effective organizational structures, environments, curriculum activities, services, and developmental and special needs of children 5-12 years of age. Students must complete fieldwork for this course. (2 contact hours)

Prerequisite: ECED 1130, ECED 1530, ECED 1650, ECED 1800, ECED 2110, ECED 2160; or permission of instructor This specialized course addresses the professionalism, knowledge, and competencies needed for effective leadership of early care and education programs. Topics include planning, administering, managing, financing, staffing, and licensing early education programs. Students will explore current issues and public policies through the perspective of child advocacy, career pathways, and professional development within the early education field. The course also addresses state laws governing programs and ethical conduct in the profession. (3 contact hours)

Prerequisite: admission to Early Childhood Education program, minimum of 2.0 GPA, permission of Early Childhood Education program director This course is a supervised student teaching experience with young children of diverse ages (infancy to school-age), diverse abilities, and reflecting socially, culturally, and linguistically diverse family systems. It includes actual practicum experience in child guidance, assessment, teaching strategies, and overall operation of an early childhood education program. Students must spend a minimum of 14 hours student teaching in an assigned school placement and two hours in a college seminar each week of the semester. (16 contact hours: 2 lecture, 14 lab)

Second-year standing in Early Childhood Education program, or graduate of ECE or related program, or permission of instructor This course introduces students to the Reggio Emilia Approach to learning. Emergent curriculum, project exploration, creative art media, and cultural influences are issues the student will explore. The course also discusses portfolio assessment and documentation. Students must complete documented and supervised field work for the course. (3 contact hours)
