This course will begin with the last years of the Qing dynasty, Western intervention in the mid-19th century, events leading to the formation of the People's Republic of China in 1949 to the gradual integration of the PRC in the global economy in the 1990's. Emphasis will be given to the arts, religion and literature of the Qing dynasty along with issues of ethnic diversity, environmentalism and post-Mao economic development. PREREQUISITES: Open to juniors and seniors only.
