    (1-3 sem. hrs.) An opportunity for students to investigate an area normally not contained in existing courses or to investigate an area in greater depth than is possible in existing courses. The area of investigation need not necessarily to be in the area of certification of the student. Students are to identify the topic and method of investigation. Students are to complete a Learning Contract, clearly specifying the objectives, procedures and the rationale for independent study. Approval of instructor and the appropriate director and graduate dean is required in advance of registration deadlines. (Fall, Spring, Summer) PREREQUISITES: Approval of program director.

    (3 sem. hrs.) Co-Teaching is a process which helps school staff better meet the needs of diverse learners. The purpose of this course is to provide both an overview of co-teaching as well as detailed information about planning, implementing, and evaluating co-teaching programs. Participants will have the opportunity to explore both the conceptual and the operational aspects of this innovative approach to service delivery as well as learning other collaborative skills that can help co-teachers succeed in teaching ALL children. The course is designed for elementary and secondary general and special education teachers as well as counselors and administrators. It will be particularly helpful to professionals who are currently or planning to: 1) co-teach 2) serve on problem-solving teams 3) consult with other professionals. (Summer)

    (1-3 sem. hrs.) Each workshop will be individually designed with the course description and other pertinent data retained on file in the offices of the program director and/or the Registrar. A maximum of 4 semester hours of workshop credit may be applied to the degree. (Offered occasionally, summer)

    (3 sem. hrs.) The culminating course in the program in which the student designs, implements, evaluates and reports on an action research project. Students will have until August of the following year to complete the course requirements. (Fall only, Arrowhead Park: Fall Term I) PREREQUISITES: EDU502 and at least two of the following four required courses EDU500, EDU501, EDU504, EDU522

After initial enrollment in EDU590 Practicum in Education (3 sem. hrs.), the student must be continuously enrolled (Summer, Fall, Spring) in EDU591 Practicum in Education II (1 sem. hr.). Only the initial three (3) sem. hrs. for EDU590 may count toward the degree. (Fall, Spring, Summer)

    (3 sem. hrs.) This course is designed to introduce preservice, teacher-education students to an educational system that takes full advantage of the cultural, racial, societal, economic and academic diversity in today's schools. The demographics, characteristics, methods and materials of informal and formal diagnosis, assessment and teaching of "exceptionality", including cultural, racial, societal, economic and academic diversity present in today's schools and the wider society. Implications for educational philosophy, theory, policy and practice will be discussed. Class participants will be required to reflect on, develop and communicate professional and personal perceptions concerning diversity at each of these levels. (Fall and Spring) PREREQUISITES: (GPA of 2.5 or pass the Praxis II PLT test and all subject area tests in your major. Check with education department on which Praxis tests you need to pass). C- or higher in EDU110 or MUS110 ; PSY101.

    (0 sem. hrs.) Education Camp Field Experience. 1 week residential camp counseling experience with diverse students. To be completed by all Education Majors. (Fall and Spring) PREREQUISITES: 2.75 GPA, C- or higher in EDU 110, 115, PSY 101; COREQUISITES: Taken concurrently with or following EIS 265 (C- or higher)
