The study of the American criminal justice system with an emphasis on Constitutional issues informing police and court practices and procedures and the underlying rational for fair and impartial treatment of citizens in a democratic society. Students with credit for POL151 will not also receive credit for CJS151.

    (3 to 14 sem. hrs.) Students majoring in Criminal Justice must successfully complete an internship of at least three hours and not more than 14 hours in the Fall Semester of their senior year. The internship must be taken concurrently with the Senior Seminar CJS490. It is open to seniors majoring in Criminal Justice and juniors by permission of Department Chair. (Fall Only) PREREQUISITE: Must be taken concurrently with CJS490 and seniors majoring in Criminal Justice and juniors majoring in Criminal Justice by permission of the Department Chair.

    (1 sem. hrs.) The Senior Seminar in Criminal Justice, offered concurrently with CJS370 (the internship), involves regular meetings (two hours every other week) where students will discuss their internship experiences and the planning and writing of a research paper in the field of criminal justice. Students will present their research to the class at the end of the semester. This course will serve as the Capstone for students majoring in Criminal Justice and be offered in the Fall Semester. It is open to seniors majoring in Criminal Justice and juniors majoring in Criminal Justice by permission of Department Chair. The seminar must be taken concurrently with CJS370. (Fall) PREREQUISITES: Must be taken concurrently with CJS370 and open to seniors majoring in Criminal Justice and juniors majoring in Criminal Justice by permission of Department Chair.

    (3 sem. hrs.) The Senior Seminar in Criminal Justice examines the full professional, bureaucratic, and geographic breadth of the overlapping fields of criminal justice, homeland security, and national security. Students will research and present on selected functions, organizations, issues, and opportunities within that wide professional range. This course will serve as the Capstone for students majoring in Criminal Justice and is open to Juniors and Seniors in Criminal Justice. (Fall) Prerequisites: Criminal Justice major, Junior or Senior Status

    (3 sem. hrs.) Introduction to theory and practice of effective oral communication in public situations. Students will examine and participate in a variety of informative and persuasive speeches. (Fall and Spring)

    (3 sem. hrs.) Study of the communication skills needed for effective work in teams. Designed to increase student's ability to communicate orally, think critically, and establish interpersonal relationships within the context of the small group or team. Practice in group leadership, participation, and problem-solving. (Fall only)

    (1 sem. hr.) This course intends to introduce the communication, media, and theatre arts majors to the theories, concepts, and expectations of the entire CTA discipline. In addition, while in this class each student will create a portfolio that will eventually contain copies of all their writings, performances, productions, speeches, etc. Each student will maintain their portfolio throughout their tenure at Heidelberg as a CTA major. Field trips to area businesses and industries that routinely employ Heidelberg CTA alumni may also be part of this course. Open to CTA majors and minors only. (Fall only)

    (1 sem. hr.) Twelve hours of preliminary round intercollegiate speech competition plus 45 hours of preparation. Up to six hours of non-competitive public performance may be substituted for preliminary round competition. Student entered in competition by consent of coach. (Fall and Spring)

    (3 sem. hrs.) Examination of communication behaviors in family, friendship, work and intimate relationships. Variables such as self-concept, perception, expression of feelings, and verbal and non-verbal codes will be analyzed through readings, research and experience. Students with credit for COM354 will not also receive credit for COM245. (Fall only)
